From 1969 through 1971, Johnny Cash hosted and starred in his own groundbreaking television variety program, introducing pop audiences to the authentic deep country sounds of the Carter Family and the Statler Brothers, while opening up country audiences to a range of contemporary artists including Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Kris Kristofferson and Eric ClaptonÕs Derek and the Dominos. By 1971, when this painterly study of Johnny Cash was lensed by Al Clayton, the artist had solidified his spectral public image, often performing in a knee-length black coat and penning the anthemic title song for his best-selling "Man In Black" album, which bulleted to #1 on America's Country charts.
