Duke Ellington in Formal Wear, 1957 - Fine Art Print
Description:
By 1957, the year following his triumph at Newport, Duke Ellington's career was in a period of renewed ascendancy and artistic innovation. 1957 saw the release of such diverse projects as "Such Sweet Thunder," a song suite based on the plays and characters of William Shakespeare, the televised allegorical conundrum "A Drum is a Woman," and "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook," a landmark recording pairing the incomparable jazz vocalist with the great American composer for the first of a series of indelible collaborations. This rare color print of Duke Ellington in 1957 finds the dapper jazz master in full evening wear, surrounded by ladies in red in what appears to be a staged masked ball.
