Duke Ellington at the Piano During "Anatomy of a Murder" Sessions, 1959
Description:
I like playing with music and its relationship to the theater, particularly in the supporting role," said Duke Ellington in a contemporary interview regarding the Otto Preminger film "Anatomy of a Murder," in 1959. "Doing the score for a picture really calls for being along with the action and absorbing all of the atmosphere of everything taking place in the picture." Ellington's attitude of seeming nonchalance, relaxed yet thorough, supremely confident while enjoying the nuance of every note, lay at the heart of his genius and is plainly visible in this second shot from the "Anatomy of a Murder" sessions. Ellington's score for the film would earn him three Grammy Awards.
